Introduction to Autumn Foraging Hike

Have you ever wanted to learn about wild edibles that are commonly found during the autumn season? Maybe you have some foundational knowledge but want to learn the history and practical uses of wild foods? If so, this is a wonderful opportunity to do so! George Barnett, the founder and educator of The Hungry Forager will be taking us for a walk to discover all of the seasonal offerings that await us at Blackacre. Tree crops are in abundance during the autumn months (e.g. black walnuts, acorns, persimmons, hickory nuts). In addition to tree crops, he will take us on the hunt for any seasonal edible mushroom species that may be present during the event. George will discuss how to gather, process and use many of these wild edibles to further enrich our autumn traditions. In addition, he’ll discuss proper identification techniques, sustainable harvesting practices, ecological roles, safety and tips on harvesting and using wild edibles at home.
George Barnett owns and operates The Hungry Forager, an educational program based out of the Bluegrass Region focused on teaching people about wild edibles, ethnobotany, ecology and native plants. His background studies are focused on restoration ecology, foraging and the history of utilizing tree crops in North America.
